Once Upon a Time in North Adams..."
Welcome to our project: "Once Upon a Time in North Adams..."
You are about to take a journey where you will find new and interesting information about what you perhaps thought was nothing special. Be prepared to be amazed!
We are going to travel to places in North Adams and the vicinity known as Northern Berkshire. We will learn about the people who have lived here. What role in the development of our community did the Abenaki, French, Irish, Italian, Jewish, Welsh, Scottish, British, Pakistani, German, Polish, Indian, and other nationalities play?
The beautiful landmarks such as Natural Bridge, Mt. Greylock,Windsor Lake, the Cascades, Witt's Ledge, the Hoosac Mountain Range and the Hoosac Tunnel, the site of Fort Massachusetts, and the many Historic Mills hold fascinating stories that you will get to know and share with others. Did you know that the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art was the the site of a civil war encampment of a local troop of soldiers called "The Johnson Greys"? Look closely at the plaque at the entrance gate next time you visit. We will investigate the names that have been given to different places such as your street name, North and South Adams, Williamstown, Clarksburg, and others. Who were they named after?
Finally, You will learn about YOU. You will present your life in a digital scrapbook. When did you arrive here? How have you made a difference to this community? What have you done that you would like to share? Your photographs, interviews and personal narratives will present North Adams as seen through your eyes as it is in the year 2007.
Hang on to your hat, we are on our way!
