Nathaniel Hawthorne in North Adams
Nathaniel Hawthorne is an American author who lived in Salem, Massachusetts for most of his life. He wrote two well-known books: The Scarlet Letter and The House of the Seven Gables. Did you know that he came to stay in North Adams during the summer of 1838? While visiting here, he stayed on Main Street at a hotel named the North Adams House and visited Natural Bridge and Mount Greylock. He also met some interesting people! We will be reading excerpts from his journal and identifying places he visited while he was here. I think you will have fun seeing how North Adams looked in "the old days".
Hawthorne found North Adams so interesting that he wrote a short story named "Ethan Brand". Has a place in North Adams inspired you to write? We'll see!
